Recruited from AFC Bournemouth for a then club record fee of £145,000 in February 1974, Phil Boyer’s goals were not enough to prevent the Canaries sliding to the drop in 1973/74.

The following campaign once again saw Boyer form a formidable striker partnership with Ted MacDougall as City won promotion from the Second Division at the first attempt. The Boyer/MacDougall partnership yielded 32 league goals as City ended the campaign in third place behind Manchester United and Aston Villa.

Boyer’s 16 goals in 1974/75 included four braces, his double strikes coming against Orient and Oldham away and in the Carrow Road clashes with Bristol City and Nottingham Forest. His impressive goalscoring form continued in the First Division the following season and he became the club’s first full England international when he debuted against Wales on 24 March 1976.

Date of death: 1 January 2002

Another hero of the Canaries’ 1958/59 FA Cup run, Bobby Brennan also made his mark on the club’s promotion-winning campaign the following season.

Widely regarded as one of Norwich City’s most skilful players of all time, Brennan was blessed with tremendous close control and the capability to almost glide past opponents. He also had the ability to chip in with goals and contributed four in the 1959/60 campaign, with his final goal for the club coming in the 3-0 Carrow Road victory over Halifax Town on 18 April 1960 in the penultimate home game of the season.

A goalless draw away to Queens Park Rangers signalled the end of his 250-game Canary career and how fitting that promotion was achieved in Brennan’s final season at Carrow Road.

BRENNAN, Jim

Date of birth: 8 May 1977

Place of birth: Ontario, Canada

Position: Defender

Promotion campaign: 2003/04 First Division champions

2003/04 League statistics: 7(8)1

Signed from First Division rivals Nottingham Forest on a Bosman-style free transfer in the summer of 2003, Jim Brennan arrived at Carrow Road with the view of adding competition for places at left-back and on the left side of midfield.

A deep-seated abductor muscle injury delayed his debut until November 2003 and he was never able to really force himself into the first-team picture on a regular basis. He started seven league games as the Canaries won the First Division title under the management of Nigel Worthington in 2004.

The highlight of Brennan’s time at Carrow Road was his cracking goal against Coventry City at Highfield Road in City’s 2-0 triumph in February 2004 during the 2003/04 campaign.

BRIGGS, Keith

Date of birth: 11 December 1981

Place of birth: Glossop

Position: Defender

Promotion campaign: 2003/04 First Division champions

2003/04 League statistics: 1(2)

A promising right-back, Keith Briggs joined Norwich City from Stockport County for a fee of £65,000 in January 2003 and debuted the following month in a 2-2 draw with Stoke City at Carrow Road on 1 February 2003. Despite his promise shown at Edgeley Park, he found first-team opportunities scarce at Carrow Road due to the form of first Steen Nedergaard and then Marc Edworthy in the 2003/04 promotion season.
